Hotels & accommodation (5/10):The hotels in Vientiane were pretty much full when i was there, and had some problems finding something. Book in advance is smart. But when you find something you'll get good value for your money. Lakeo guest house had clean air-con room for $10/night .
Places to eat (5/10): Laos food taste pretty much like thai food. You'll find excellent laos and indian food in Vientiane, but the western food was a little disappointing.
Beach (N/A):Vientiane is far away from the sea...
Shopping (5/10):Inside the town there really isnt anything to buy. Head for the morning market- one of the best markets I've seen in asia. A lot of strange food, pirate cd/dvds, fake polo/gucci/dkny/etc.
Local culture & people (7/10): The local people in Vientiane are all friendly.
Activities & Attractions (3/10):Not that much to see and do really. Morning market was good, a few temples could be interesting. Other than that, not much.
Nightlife (2/10):A small and quiet town. Not much of a nightlife, really.
Summary:I found Luang Prabang much more interesting. Vientiane is nice and quiet to cool down if you have come from Bangkok, though.
