Hotels & accommodation (8/10):Not that many hotels to choose from, but there are a few from cheap and simple to expensive and luxurius. We stayed at Maison du Vent and it was perfect. Its a small guest house with a very autentic and rustic moroccan atmosphere. The rooms are simple but cozy and clean. Great view from the terrasse overlooking Essaouira and the sea. We paid about $200 for two persons/three nights. Well spent money for enjoying genuine Moroccan atmosphere and hospitality.
Places to eat (9/10): By the port in Essaouria, there are many sea food restaurants serving the best sea food I've ever tasted. The Moroccon kitchen is so rich in wonderful flavours. Yum-Yum . And the atmosphere in the port of Essaouira is something very special. Resturants are pretty cheap.
Beach (8/10):A long, big beach. Its very nice, but the water is a bit cold. There is usually a cooling breeze in Essaouria, so sunbathing on the beach never get uncomfortable hot. You might see camels walking along the beach, which gives the beach an excotic feel.
Shopping (6/10):Spices and carpets are good value. Also local handicraft. The experience of shopping in Morocco is more important than what you buy. The shop keepers are though, be prepared to bargain!
Local culture & people (9/10): Essaouira is all about experience the culture. Its not run down bu tourism like so many other beach resorts. The moroccon culture is real and strong in Essaouira. The local people are friendly, but the shop keepers can be a handful.
Activities & Attractions (5/10):There really isnt any attraction or activities, like a waterpark or zoo or something, made to please the tourists. That why Essaourira feels so genuine. The beach, the medina and the port are attractions enough for me. Who needs an amusment park?
Nightlife (3/10):Some of the hotels have bars, but its not much of a night life.
Summary:I can understand why Jimi Hendrix loved this place. Essaouira has a great, relaxed atmosphere. I'm going back for sure.
